What to ignore · 4 min read

Do you actually need to pay for AI?

The upgrade prompts are relentless. Here's when the free version is plenty — and the rare case a subscription earns its keep.

Every AI app nudges you toward a paid plan. For most people, most of the time, the free tier is genuinely enough.

What free already gives you

Start free. If you go weeks without hitting a limit, you have your answer — don't pay for reassurance.

When paying is fair

A subscription — usually around $20 a month — mainly buys the newest, sharpest model and higher limits. That's worth it if you're using AI most days for real work, or you keep hitting the ceiling on something that matters. Otherwise, keep your money.

And ignore the urgency in the upgrade banner. It's a sales prompt, not a status report on how you're doing.

The one thing to do

Start free and stay free until a limit genuinely gets in your way. The upgrade nag is marketing — not a sign you're falling behind.
